For most of my career, I have been a consultant working with clients to help them solve their user experience problems. This has given me a breadth and depth of experience, from huge enterprise applications to e-commerce websites to an interface for a TV-based gaming startup. But it's not just about designing pretty screens. Part of my job — a lot of my job — is to bring together disparate teams that may not always talk to each other very well. This helps facilitate a better user experience that meets both user and business goals. I'm a translator. I speak business pretty fluently and can talk "tech" with your developers. In addition, I bring something unique to the conversation — the user's perspective. Together, we can build great stuff.
I am not one of those consultants who shows up with a "solution" in hand and demands you agree to it. I understand that I do not know it all — that's not my job. My job is to bring expertise in what users usually want and uncover exactly what your users want. My job is to learn, design, teach and strategize to make the user experience superior.
Simple ≠ Complex; Density ≠ Complexity
Finding the right balance of complexity on the screen is not always easy. We could say, "Take anything off the screen that isn't serving a purpose and adding value to the user experience." But that's not always a clear answer. We need to know a lot about the user, the process, their goals and their motivations. We need to remember that a lot of things create complexity: Visual design, content, words, expertise of the user, frequency of use, even the process itself.
I strive to build elegant, sophisticated experiences — ones that are simple but robust and effective. To do that, I use a smart methodology to lead me to good answers. I learn about you, I learn about your users, I build structure and pages around "best practices", and I test frequently. What comes out are useful, usable, and enjoyable user interfaces.
